Psycho-educational Assessments

Some learners underperform academically, due to a variety of internal and external reasons. The purpose of a Psycho-educational assessment is to explore possible reasons for academic underachievement, to give tailor-made recommendations and intervention options. These assessments are usually completed in four phases:

•  PHASE 1 – An intake interview takes place with the parent/s or guardian, to understand why you would like the child to be assessed and get background information. The child does not attend this meeting. I might also contact teachers to get their input (after obtaining informed consent from the parents).

•  PHASE 2 – The assessment is conducted with the child (over one or two days). My decision on which instruments to include in this assessment, is informed by the reason for referral, but usually includes an IQ test, a reading/writing/spelling/mathematics assessment, neurological screening tests, perceptual assessments, attention measures and emotional assessments.

•  PHASE 3 – I interpret results and compile a comprehensive report.

•  PHASE 4 – I meet with parents for a feedback meeting, during which I discuss the results and give recommendations to improve scholastic performance and functioning.

School Readiness assessments

School Readiness assessments are conducted to determine if a child is ready to enter the school environment or not. One can also establish early on if a child needs additional support during this assessment, which could help to proactively deal with learning, emotional or perceptual barriers. I assess the child’s cognitive, perceptual, social, and emotional maturity levels to deliver a professional opinion. Parents receive a comprehensive report during a feedback session.

Career and Subject Choice Assessments

Gr 9 learners’ parents send their children for subject choice assessments, to determine which subjects they should consider taking in Gr 10 to pursue their envisioned future career paths. Gr 11 and 12 learners (as well as other older individuals) contact me for career assessments to explore potential future career paths. All assessments are done individually in practice, and include the following tests:

•  Aptitude/ IQ test
•  Personality assessment
•  2 x career interest questionnaires
•  Values assessment
•  Study habits and orientation
•  Career developmental level
•  A Post-modern assessment of career values

Concession Assessments

Learners diagnosed with learning barriers can apply for concessions at school authorities during assessments (e.g., extra time, separate venue, amanuenses, planning). One needs to give school authorities a psycho-educational assessment report to apply for concessions, which I do provide.

Psychological well-being is influenced by their living circumstances and relationships with others. Dr. Jeanne works systemically by offering the following services;

•  Family therapy – Family therapy is conducted with all family members. Families converse, participate in activities and discuss issues, to improve family functioning. It is especially families dealing with adjustment issues, trauma or other adversities that benefit from this.

•  Parent guidance – During these sessions, I work with parents to understand which discipline style or interactions would benefit their children. Differently put, I help parents to understand their children’s needs and themselves in relation to their children better.

Dr. Jeanne provides individual study skills training to learners. During these sessions, she determines the learner’s learning style and preferences, and give tailor-made suggestions or skills training. She also has a special interest in learner motivation (based on her PhD studies) and therefore specifically help learners to feel more motivated. She also supports learners with barriers (e.g. ADHD).
